AR Rahman sparks row after criticizing Bollywood blockbuster

AR Rahman, in a recent podcast, described Chhaava (Hindi) as "divisive". The Hindi-language blockbuster, released in 2025, was headlined by the Vicky Kaushal-Rashmika Mandanna duo. The epic historical action film grossed nearly Rs 800 Cr.

Rahman has been criticized by netizens for calling out Chhaava, a film for which he composed the music. "Which part of the film did he find untrue? It is documented history. The discomfort seems less about accuracy and more about not wanting younger generations to see what Muslim invaders actually did in India," a netizen wrote.

In the podcast, Rahman also complained that, in the last eight years, he has lost out on a number of offers in Bollywood. Those films came his way first. However, suddenly, he would be replaced by five other music directors (because many Bollywood films have a separate composer for each song).

AR Rahman, who is currently composing music by Ram Charan's Peddi, last year had releases like Thug Life.
