The names of financiers are known only to a few people in the film industry and the media. While they make several big projects possible by arranging loads of money, they don't hog the limelight. One such person is CJ Roy, who is well-known in Mollywood. He died by suicide on Friday during an Income-Tax raid on one of his properties in Bengaluru.
As per news media reports, the books of Roy's Confident Group have been investigated by the IT department. "Earlier on Thursday morning, the Income Tax Department had conducted raids on companies linked to him. During the raids, it was allegedly revealed that he possessed assets disproportionate to his known sources of income," NDTV reported. He shot himself in his head during the raid on Friday.
Marakkar: Lion of the Arabian Sea, starring Mohanlal and released in 2021, is believed to be CJ Roy's most ambitious project. This historical epic won the National Film Award for Best Feature Film. Roy co-produced it alongside Aashirvad Cinemas. Casanovva, in 2012, was Roy’s grand entry into film production. At the time of its release, it was one of the most expensive Malayalam films ever made, shot extensively in Europe.
