Superstar Rajinikanth's 173rd movie will be helmed by Sundar C, hardly a star director in today's times. Tentatively referred to as Thalaivar173 until they decide on a title, this one will be produced by Kamal Haasan's RaajKamal Films International. This is a single-hero movie and Kamal will only be a producer.
This is quite a strange choice of director by the Rajini-Kamal duo. Something unexpected might be up their sleeves. That said, Rajini has been making peculiar choices after Robot. Nobody was expecting him to give Pa.Ranjith another chance after Kabali but they both did Kaala. Kabali had a table profit of Rs 100 Cr even before its release, but it was not liked by the majority of the audience. Rajini united with TJ Gnanavel on Vettaiyan last year; it was a disaster.

Thalaivar173 is slated for a grand theatrical release through Red Giant Movies during Pongal 2027.
