Reliance, Disney to monopolize film acquisitions?

It is known that Reliance and Disney have joined hands. Reliance Industries on Wednesday signed a "binding agreement" with Disney to form a "joint venture that will combine the businesses of Viacom 18 and Star India."

Disney Plus Hotstar and Jio Cinema will seek to monopolize cricket streaming for sure. But the question is, will they also aggressively acquire post-theatrical digital rights to Hindi, Telugu and Tamil movies?

For years, Amazon Prime Video and Netflix have been dominating the scene in turns. From now, Hotstar and Jio Cinema might up the game. Already, Aha Video is on sale. This could mean that Telugu films might stream more and more on Netflix and Hotstar-Jio rather than Prime and Aha.

A report by Bloomberg said that Walt Disney and billionaire Mukesh Ambani’s conglomerate have signed a "binding pact to merge their media operations in India, creating a $8.5 billion sector behemoth in one of the world’s fastest-growing entertainment markets."
